Eid-el-Kabir: Price of food items soar in Zaria

Barely a day to Eid-el-Kabir prices of perishable items have gone up in Zaria, Kaduna State.

A survey conducted by a Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in the area shows that apart from perishables, prices of other foodstuff were also affected.

Hajiya Maryam Bello, a farmer and also a retailer said a basket of tomato that used to be between N4,500 and N5,000 now goes for N7,500 and N8,000.

She said a bag of pell peppe now cost N3,000 as against its former price of N1,800, while a bag of peppe remained stagnant between N1,700 and N1,800.

Alhaji Abba Ali, a trader at Sabogari area said 22 litre of vegetable oil which used to be N11,000 now cost N12,500.

He, however, said a bag of sugar had dropped from N20,000 to N19,000.

Also in an interview with NAN, Alhaji Ibrahim Lawal, Chairman, MD investment Ltd. attributed the hike to the Sallah festival.

According to him, a bag of rice which used to be N16,000 few days ago now goes for between N16,500 and N17,000.

He said a five litre gallon of vegetable oil went up from N2,900 to N3,200, while a five litre gallon of palm oil remained unchanged at N2,800.

Lawal said a bag of maize also remained stagnant at N16,000 and N16,500, while a bag of millet now sells at N18,000 as against N17,500.
