Businesswoman faces diesel fraud charge

A 39-year-old woman, Goodness Ebenezer, who allegedly obtained 33,000 litres of diesel valued at N7.2 million under false pretences, on Friday appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos,

The accused, whose address was not provided, is being tried for conspiracy, obtaining by false pretences and stealing.

Ebenezer, a member of the Lord’s Chosen Church, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.

But Police Prosecutor Godwin Oriabure insisted that the accused committed the offences on March 18 at Plot 200, Sunny Ogbeide Close, Diamond Estate, Festac Town, Lagos.

He alleged that the accused and others still at large obtained 33,000 litres of diesel valued at N7.2 million from Bow-tie Oil and Gas on the pretext that they would sell it and pay back within three days.

“Only the accused was apprehended, while others are still at large.”

The offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

In his ruling, Magistrate Olalekan Aka-Bashorun granted bail to the accused in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in the same amount and adjourned the case until Sept. 19 for trial.
