Prof. Andrew Zamani of the Nassarawa State University, Keffi, on Thursday urged youths in the country to always demand for accountability from their leaders to reduce corruption and enhance good governance.

Zamani, who said that failure of Nigerian youths to stand up to their leaders and demand accountability, explained why leaders are mindless and shun their responsibilities to the people.

He decried the situation whereby youths, who are supposed to be concerned with issues of justice and equity, have decided to become tools in the hands of selfish politicians to be recruited as touts and thugs.

According to him, such acts make it difficult for organised efforts towards national development to succeed.

He noted that until the youths start demanding accountability from their leaders’ things would remain the way they are.

“It becomes imperative to observe these contradictions and their implications for our survival as a people, especially the effects on the youths.

“I cannot understand why Nigerians are not angry than they are. What do young Nigerians think about their leaders and their country?

“The leaders believe that their personal interests are the interests of the people. They take people’s resources and turn it into personal wealth.

“There is a level of poverty in Nigeria that should be unacceptable,’’ said the professor.
