The Police Command in Enugu State has cautioned public office holders and business moguls against employing personal aides without doing proper background checks on them.

The command’s Spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, gave the warning on Wednesday in Enugu.

Amaraizu said that it had become clear with some investigations that most aides of some public office holders and business moguls compromised their bosses’ security.

He said that at times these aides connived with criminal elements to undo their bosses by compromising security information.

He said that besides compromising such information, some actually engaged in “outright sell out of their bosses’’.

“It is not just enough to see someone and employ him, especially when the person would be your personal aide like a messenger, driver, cook or a security guard attached to you or to your home.

“It is not just enough to say that a trusted friend of yours recommended or directed the aide to you for employment before picking him.

“There is a great need today, with the prevailing dynamism of crime, to conduct a thorough background check as well as know the antecedent of any would-be aide.

“Thorough background check and antecedent’s data would help you to understand the person better as well as be able to monitor if an aide had started having a change in character and friends,’’ he said.

The command spokesman said that it had been discovered over time that most aides do more for their bosses beyond their normal work schedule.

“At times bosses do not take notice that their aides overhear confidential personal and business discussions within their homes or in their vehicles.

“Some bosses even send their aides to the bank to complete their personal bank transactions for them,’’ Amaraizu said.
