The Bayelsa Government has approved N2 billion counterpart funds to the offices of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

The approval given by the State Executive Council (SEC) in Yenagoa on Friday provided N1 billion each for the two agencies to improve community development and basic education.

The Gov. Seriake Dickson, who presided over the meeting, explained that the approval was made to provide basic social amenities and improve basic education in the state.

Dickson, therefore, reiterated his administration’s commitment toward holistic development of the state.

While making reference to media reports on salary arrears owed local government workers, the governor said the government was not responsible for the payment of council’s staff.

According to him, the third tier of government enjoys financial autonomy in Bayelsa.

“I have made a promise to the workers on settlement of backlog of salary and we will keep to our promise and continue to be transparent in the area of salary arrears.

“But the solution is not blackmail, propaganda and not to incite the unsuspecting workers who may not have the full details of the refunds,” he said.
