The Korean Government has partnered with the Kogi State Government and Dana Motors Limited, marketers of KIA Motors, to promote the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) sector in the state.

According to a statement from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) on Wednesday in Abuja, Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi met with officials of KOICA and KIA Motors to discuss possible cooperation in the sector.

KOICA Country Director/Regional Representative Sook Hyun Park and Mr Olu Tikolo, Vice President KIA Motors met with the governor to propose an agreement on a TVET project.

The project known as KOICA-KOGI-KIA project (3Ks) aims to support the revitalisation of the TVET sector in the state.

According to the project proposal, KIA Motors, which is also a Korean automobile company, would provide and share new technologies of the industry.

The company would also support students of the Nigeria-Korea Friendship Institute of Vocational and Advanced Technology (NKFI) located in Kogi state.

KOICA would, however, coordinate with the state government for the project initiation and commencement.

In 2015, the Korean Government through its development agency KOICA completed and handed over the NKFI to the Kogi government which cost 3.5 million dollars.

The NKFI offers trainings in four fields namely welding and fabrication, automobile engineering, electronical engineering and information technology.

Since its inauguration, the NKFI has been awaiting accreditation but currently runs short-term-courses (3 to 6 months) on information technology, welding and fabrication, and electrical and electronics.

It has also graduated 44 students.

“KOICA hopes that the 3Ks project would strengthen the relationship between the engaged parties, ensure the long-term sustainability of the institute, and empower graduates that will propel the economy on a dynamic growth trajectory.”
