The President of the Enugu Union in South Africa, Mr Mike Ugwu, says the group has commenced data capturing of its members resident in that country.
Ugwu in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Tuesday said that members of the union were given priority in the exercise.
“However, we intend to capture every Enugu indigent resident in South Africa. We are collaborating with Nigeria`s Consul General in South Africa in this regard.
“The idea is that if any Enugu indigene in South Africa has a problem, we will know how to intervene,” he said.
Ugwu said that branches of the union in the nine provinces of South Africa had commenced the exercise while the response had been positive.
According to him, the registration recently yielded a positive result because the union intervened to save a member from deportation.
He said the member went to renew his document when he was taken to the deportation centre by the South African Immigration Service.
“We contacted our Secretary-General, who is a lawyer, to intervene and the member is already back to his business.
“We also advise members not to engage in illegal businesses to avoid tying our hands,” he said.
Ugwu said the data project would assist the Union monitor the activities of the youths, especially in educating them on laws of the host country.
“We are happy with the exercise. It is already yielding good results,” the president said.
