An insurance and  pension administrator, Mr Mufutau Oyegunle, has hailed Lagos State Government for prompt release of funds to pay pensions.

Oyegunle made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos on the heels of release of N684 million by the government for pensions.

“According to Lagos State Pension Commission, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode has released N684 million to pay pension to 218 retirees under the contributory pension scheme for the month of June,’’ he said.

Oyegunle, a former manager with Leadway Assurance Company, decried non-payment of pensions to retirees in some states.

He implored the governments of the states to emulate Lagos State on pension matters.

According to him, Lagos has expended over N28.5 billion in the last two years on pension matters.

He advised states owing pensions arrears to develop special intervention programmes for retirees.

“A loan scheme to help pensioners to meet their obligations, pending when the arrears are paid, will be good.

“It will help pensioners to set up businesses of their choices to keep body and soul together pending when they are paid.

“Such petty loans can easily be recovered from what is due to the pensioner, should he fail in repayment.

“It is not good for pensioners to go hungry after serving their fatherland for 35 years,’’ he said.

He also commended the Federal Government’s plan to evolve measures that would ensure full payment  as and when due.
