Caution: Bump Ahead

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has called for the construction of speed breakers shortly before crossing roundabouts in Jos-Bukuru metropolis, as a measure to curtail road traffic crashes.

The Zonal Commanding Officer in charge of Jos zone, Mr Jonas Agwu, gave this advice on Thursday, when he visited the Jos zonal office of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Agwu recalled that from January to date, 39 crashes had occurred around the roundabouts within the Jos metropolis, which resulted in casualties.

“Within this period, we have recorded nine deaths, with 22 persons severely injured in 39 road traffic crashes within the Jos-Bukuru metropolis.

“All these crashes happened around roundabouts in the city.

“So, we have met with the government authorities and advised that speed breakers or calming device be erected few meters before roundabouts.

“We also suggested that road guides, including the installation of steel light, warnings and regulatory signs be put in place near roundabouts.

“We strongly believe that if these things are done, it will reduce the number of crashes we record on a daily basis within the city,’’ he said.

Agwu, however, admonished drivers and other road users to obey traffic rules and regulations, so as to make the roads safer for all.

Responding, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Jos Zonal Manager, Mr Ephraim Sheyin, appreciated the FRSC commanding officer for the visit, describing it as ‘apt’.

He pledged that NAN would support the FRSC in its quest to ensure safety of lives and property on the highways by publicising its activities.

The Jos corps zonal command comprises of Benue, Plateau and Nasarawa States.
