Gunmen have kidnapped Dr. Alex Akani, a medical consultant of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Department of Family Medicine, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).

The full details of circumstances surrounding the kidnap of the renowned medical doctor remains hazy as at press time.

A statement from the Public Relations Officer of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association, UPTH, Dr. Chukwuemeka Emmanuel, said Akani was abducted from his home in Rumuekini, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

The statement appealed to the state government and the security agencies to ensure the safe release of their colleague.

Reacting to the incident, spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, Omoni Nnamdi, a DSP, said the command had intensified efforts for the safe rescue of the victim and the arrest of his abductors.

It would be recalled that medical doctors in Rivers State had on several occasions staged public protest over the incessant kidnap of medical doctors in the state and secured assurances from security agencies that adequate protection will be provided for them.
