Hosts Rangers International Football Club of Enugu on Wednesday beat FC Ifeanyi Ubah 1-0 in a 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Match Day 26 fixture.

Rangers’ striker Ifeanyi George made the difference in the match when he scored in the 34th minute against the visitors at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

Rangers missed several goalscoring chances thereafter, as visiting goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa thwarted all their efforts.

Rangers’ Interim Coach, Chukwuma Agbo, who praised the two teams after the match, said it was noteworthy that Enugu fans enjoyed their gate fee for the match.

“We would have scored more than a goal, but we failed to covert many chances that came our way.

“The players were up and doing because they knew that people are looking up to them to show why they are the defending champions,’’ he said.

Agbo also expressed joy over the performance of the referees, saying the referees did well in the match.

FC IfeanyiUbah’s skipper Ezenwa expressed disappointment with the result, saying they deserved at least a draw against Rangers.

“We know that Rangers are a good side and do not forget that we have met them three times whereby we beat them twice and drew once before this match.

“But it is not a bad result considering the pedigree of Rangers in Nigeria football league,’’ he said.

Ezenwa disclosed that they came to Enugu to pick the three points and at worst get a draw but they were not lucky to make it reality.

“Well, this is not the end of the league. We are going to keep fighting for the remaining points in the league.

“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and today we lost. So, let’s just say we gave Rangers the respect as the defending champions,’’ he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Rangers now occupy the 12th position on the NPFL log with 35 points from 26 matches.
