Mrs Ladi Bantex, the wife of the Kaduna State deputy governor, says she is committed to promoting girl-child education in the state.

In an interview in Kaduna on Monday, she said women had continued to lag behind due to failure to educate the girl- child.

Bantex said she had concluded plans to boost girl-child education in the state through Second Chance Initiative, her non-governmental organisation, specifically established to address societal challenges affecting the girl child in particular.

She explained that the organisation was established to promote girl-child education and give school dropout girls a second chance in life.

She noted that the organisation also would expand interventions in the area of HIV and AIDS, hygiene and drug abuse, among others.

She pointed out that culture, religion, tradition, poverty and illiteracy, among other factors, had hindered full development of the girl-child.

“Second Chance Initiative is conducting series of meetings with heads of primary and secondary schools, women leaders, religious and traditional leaders, to work out strategies on how to educate the girl-child.

“We would carry out a massive awareness campaign to relevant stakeholders on the need to pay serious attention to the girl child.

“We would equally carry out enlightenment campaign to educate the gild-child on how to exploit their potential and live a productive life,’’ she said.

She said the method to reintegrate the dropout was to work out a way for them to be reabsorbed in school to complete their education and be equipped with skills.

“We are already discussing with principals of secondary schools to that effect and we are equally working out adult education programme for adult women to acquire basic education,’’ she said.

Bantex explained that the organisation had reached out to thousands of school dropout, particularly women, since establishment in 2000.
