Gov. Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe on Friday distributed 130 sets of animal traction equipment to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Gujba and Gulani local government areas to revive their agricultural production

The governor, who distributed the animals and traction equipment in Buni-Yadi, said that the project was aimed at boosting food production in the communities of returning IDPs.

Gaidam, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Mustapha Gajirima, said: “In an effort to ensure food security and fight poverty, government procured the animals and the traction packages for distribution to the displaced persons.’’

He said that the government procured 130 pairs of oxen carts and agricultural implements at the cost of N49.6 million.

The governor urged the beneficiaries not to sell the animals and farm implements, adding that the government would continue to accord priority to rain-fed and irrigation farming activities.

Besides, Gaidam said that the state government had released N38.6 million for the repair of tractors to boost agricultural production in the state.

Also speaking, the commissioner for agriculture, who was represented by Alhaji Makama Gashua, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, said that the package would support the communities in their efforts to restart farming activities.

He said that government would continue to support farmers in the state so as to guarantee food security and economic rehabilitation.
