A 38-year-old woman caught up in a stampede at an open-air screening of the football Champions League final on June 3, has died.

Panic broke out in the north-western town of Turin during the June 3 screening of the match between home side Juventus and Real Madrid.

Thousands of people started running after hearing a bang.

In the commotion, Erika Pioletti suffered a stroke which left her in critical condition.

She died late on Thursday, the ANSA news agency said, quoting the San Giovanni Bosco hospital.

Some 1,526 other people were injured, including a 7-year-old boy who spent two days in a coma but was released from hospital on Tuesday.

Most of the injured suffered cuts from broken glass bottles when they fell on the floor as people were trying to escape from what they thought was a terrorist attack.

Turin mayor Chiara Appendino and local police have been heavily criticised for offering inadequate security at the event.

Appendino met the victim’s relatives on Friday, and ordered flags at half mast from public buildings.

Condolences for the family have also been offered by Matteo Renzi, former premier and leader of the ruling Democratic Party.
