Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Thursday said the economy of Lagos State is more viable than that of other West African countries put together.

Ambode, who spoke while flagging of a two-day training in Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria said the state had more industries than all West African countries put together, adding that Lagos had been adjured the 5th largest economy in Africa.

He said to keep pace with this achievement, the need for training and retraining manpower to keep the vision moving was paramount.

The governor, however, stated that directors who were participating in the training on “Identifying Effective Management Strategies for the Lagos State Public Service” were to be the ambassadors and seed-propagating agents of the current administration’s resolve to re-orientate the Lagos State Public Service.

“It is my profound hope that, at the end of this training, all of you in attendance would imbibe the purports of the training and discharge your duties accordingly. Indeed, the importance of strategy, strategic planning, and strategic management has been proved and validated over the years and, in fact, over the centuries.

“At the end of any rigorous inquiry, one finds that to have an effective strategy is half the battle and to effectively manage a good strategy is everything. Furthermore, the leading strategist must count on the employees or members of the organization to make sound tactical and operational decisions that are aligned with the desired strategic direction.

“To ensure that these decisions are well made, the articulated strategic direction and strategic plans must be applicable and clearly related to the issues that people face,” said Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Benson Oke.

According to the governor, it was always helpful to remember that an effective strategy provided a picture of the desired long-term future, stressing that in order to make sound day-to-day decisions, all members of the organization must be able to begin with the end in mind, adding that all steps must ultimately keep the public service on course toward the long-term objective.

Permanent Secretary, Office of Establishments and Training, Folasade Ogunnaike charged the directors to pay more attention to the training as they were being repositioned for higher service.

“It is better for you to listen attentively, no one knows everything, listen and critique whatever is handed over to you. We are passionate about building excellence in Lagos State,” he said.
