The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has warned manufacturers against producing substandard chemical products, saying they were dangerous to the society and environment.
The Director-General, SON, Osita Aboloma gave the warning at a workshop organised by SON for chemical and allied industries in Plateau.
Aboloma, who was represented by Regional Coordinator for North Central, Mr Charles Nwabara, said that substandard chemical and other products were injurious not just to consumers but also to the manufacturer.
Nwabara in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) enjoined chemical manufacturers to ensure quality products are manufactured in order to enhance consumer’s confidence in the Nigerian market.
“The workshop is organised to enlighten chemical manufacturers on the dangers posed by producing substandard chemical products.
“When products fail to meet the prescribed standard it robs the manufacturer of profits they are supposed to be making as customers desert them after testing the products.
“Substandard products also are denying the government of revenue as they don’t meet the international standard for the products to be exported.
“We call on chemical manufacturers to partner with SON right from the stage of gathering raw materials to the stage of packaging the products,” he said.
Mr George Musa, Plateau Coordinator of SON, said that apart from chemical manufacturers, the organisation would also enlighten other manufacturers against substandard products.
Musa said that the workshop covered quality assurance, quality control and quality management practices required in chemical and allied products.
The coordinator said that it was meant to minimise waste and maximise profit, ensure customer satisfaction and improve life standardisation.
