Lagos charges 220 new recruits on productivity

The Lagos State Government has charged 220 new recruits into the civil service to .utilize their skills towards engendering productivity.

Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions, Dr. Benson Oke gave this charge at the weekend at the closing ceremony of the 5-day induction course for newly employed civil servants held at the Public Service Staff Development Centre, PSSDC, Magodo area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

Oke urged the newly employed civil servants to join the present administration in dreaming the dream of a civil service where every officer had fully developed leadership potentials and ready and willing to take on responsibilities for the greater good of the state.

Oke, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Civil Service Pension Office, Adeola Hundeyin, said it is hopeful that the induction course had impacted in the officers the monumental task of becoming influential and productive to such degrees that the output of the public service would inspire the people of the state.

He charged the officers to possess problem-solving skills, adding that developing the mind-frame for deploying these skills was one of the essential soft skills that was mandatory for success in today’s rapidly changing world and public service “of our dreams.”

The commissioner was of the opinion that organisation would make rapid progress and experience exponential growth when its units, teams and departments were staffed by persons who understood what leadership meant and who had developed their leadership potentials and had enhanced their performance skills.

“To such organisation, no problem will be too complicated, no task too herculean, no challenge too huge and no task too complicated for it to confront head-on,” he said.

Acting Director-General, PSSDC, Olufunmi Ajose-Harrison said the induction course was designed to introduce participants to the basics of the public service procedure, which would enable them become integrated into the Lagos State Public Service team.

According to him, the objective of the course was to demonstrate understanding of the vision strategies of the state government; discuss rules and regulations guiding conduct in the public service, among others.

He said the participants were taken through courses, such as overview of Lagos State Development Plan, interpersonal communication, team working, personal branding and self-management, managing public finance, code of conduct and ethics, among others.
