Nigerian Archivists to assist NPF improve its archives

Prof. Olutayo Adesina, President, Society of Nigerian Archivists (SNA), has expressed the readiness of the society to assist the Nigeria Police improve its archives for enhanced documentation of criminal records.

Adesina made the statement on Friday in Abuja in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He stressed the need for the three tiers of government to pay attention to the development of archives, saying archives are relevant as sources of information for the past, present and future.

He said: “Archives are not about old papers and other documents that are only relevant about the past; they are also relevant for the present and future.

“Time has change; record keeping has gone digital; computers and other electronic apparatus have made record keeping more easy these day.

“There is need to key into this global best practice of keeping documents.

“One of the ways we can stabilise society is to help the Nigeria Police Force create data base and documents to keep records of criminals.

“I will want to develop police archives so that criminal records from the local, state to the federal government levels are well kept.’’

NAN reports that Prof. Adesina, the brother of Mr Femi Adesina, Special Assistant on Media and Publicty to President Muhammadu Buhari was recently elected president of the SNA.

He is a lecturer at the Department of History, University of Ibadan.
