Varsity gets commercial farm, radio broadcast facility

The Akwa Ibom governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, on Tuesday inaugurated a commercial farm, and a television and radio broadcast facility at the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU).

Emmanuel performed the inauguration at the Obio-Akpa campus of the university in Oruk Anam local government area of the state as part of activities marking the combined second and third convocation ceremonies of AKSU.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the commercial farm comprises of a piggery, a palm oil mill and a vegetable green house, manned by the AKSU Faculty of Agriculture.

The governor also inaugurated a digital language laboratory, as well as a theatre arts studio, in addition to the television and radio broadcast studio for the university’s Mass Communication Department.

He noted that the facilities inaugurated would boost research, teaching and quality learning in the university.

Emmanuel said that the state government was committed to quality education in the state and would provide all the facilities needed for the accreditation of courses at the university.

He advised the students to strive to excel in their studies by using the facilities provided by the management of the university.

“I stand here to inaugurate the digital language laboratory, I pray that the students will make the best use of it and imbibe of the spirit of excellence,” Emmanuel said.

The governor promised to build more infrastructure in the university and also make education accessible and affordable to the people of the state.

Speaking earlier, AKSU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Eno Ibanga, said that the university had six faculties with 35 courses out of which 25 had full accreditation, while 10 were on interim accreditation.

Ibanga said that the university was committed to research, teaching and community service, as well as moulding the students to become self-reliant through entrepreneurial teaching.

He said that the facilities inaugurated were meant to expose the students to some practical situations in their courses and professions.

NAN reports that the combined second and third convocation ceremonies will hold on May 17 at the permanent site of the university at Ikot Akpaden in the Mkpat Enin local government area.
