The Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Cross River has demoted and suspended four primary school head teachers for three months.

Dr Stephen Odey, Chairman of SUBEB disclosed this in a statement in Calabar on Thursday.

“They were demoted as head teachers of their various schools.’’

Odey said that the teachers would remain suspended pending the recommendations of the disciplinary committee set up by the board to look into their cases.

He said that the teachers fraudulently included names of non-existing staff and conspired with certain persons to stand in for them during the audit.

“The act was perpetrated with disregard and ignominy in spite of repeated announcements and correspondences warning head teachers and executive secretaries of local government education authorities of the consequences of fraudulent acts’’, he said.

He gave the names of the affected schools as Government Primary School, Kutia Obudu; Primary School, Ejakpe, Obudu; PCN Primary School, Nsidong, Bakassi; Primary School, Esekwe, Boki.

Odey described the conduct of the teachers as “grievous’’ in the face of the current challenges confronting the education sector and the state as a whole.

He said the board will not relent in its effort to sanitize the system and spare no efforts in its desire to achieve its mandate.
