Five people were on Monday evening burnt to death as a commercial bus, popularly known as ‘danfo’ caught fire in Surulere area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria.

PM News gathered that the tragedy occurred around 6:44pm at Barracks area of Surulere.

Rescue workers at the scene

Those who died included three women, a child and a man.

Five other persons who sustained burns were rushed to the hospital for urgent treatment.

General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu said the accident was reported to the agency around 6:44pm, saying that the danfo bus caught fight while descending the bridge, inward Barracks.

He said officials of the Lagos State Fire Services worked with LASEMA in putting out the fire and rescuing some people.

“Investigation carried out by the Agency revealed that a commercial Volkswagen bus (danfo) with registration number AND 996 XC caught fire as it descended the bridge inward Barracks.

“Five persons (1child, 3 females adults and 1 male adult) were burnt beyond recognition and were recovered from the bus.

“However, five people were also rescued and rushed to the hospital with severe burnt injuries. Recovery ongoing at 7:23pm,” Tiamiyu said.
