Gombe, April 5,2017 (NAN) The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) on Wednesday began a three-month training programme for the second batch of 500 youths in Gombe, in the fifth phase of the National Industrial Skills Development Programme (NISDP).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training is being done in partnership with the state government.

Declaring the training open, the state Deputy Governor, Mr Charles Iliya, said it was designed to equip the youths with skills and requisite knowledge to be self-employed and employers of labour.

“Our ultimate goal is to rid our society of redundancy, poverty dependency and crime,” he said.

Iliya commended the ITF  and development partners, including the World Bank, UNDP, SDGs, USAID and UNFPA, for their tireless efforts towards empowering the youth in Gombe.

The deputy governor enjoined the trainees to consider themselves lucky for being selected as beneficiaries of the programme, urging them to take the training serious.

Mr Joseph Ari, Director-General, NISDP, said the body had trained 84,100 Nigerians in over 30 trades and crafts.

Ari, represented by NISDP’s Director, Technical and Vocational Skills,  Mr Isiaka Shehu, said 9000 people, including the 500 youths from Gombe,  were being trained in the fifth phase of the programme.

The trainees are to undergo training in tailoring, fashion design, carpentry, hairdressing, cosmetology among others.
