Security in Jerusalem would be heightened ahead of the Jewish holiday Passover, a Senior Police Official told Army Radio on Sunday, one day after a stabbing attack in the historic Old City.

“The holidays throughout the year create a situation of greater sensitivity and tension, and are preferred dates for terror attacks,’’ said Commander Doron Turjeman, adding that Israeli forces will be on alert during the week-long holiday that begins April 10.

On Saturday, Israeli police shot and killed a 17-year-old Palestinian who allegedly stabbed two civilians and a border officer in the Old City of Jerusalem, injuring them lightly.

The officer remained in the hospital Sunday, Army Radio said, while the civilians were released.

According to police, the two civilians were attacked first.

The assailant then fled and was shortly thereafter confronted by police, with whom an altercation ensued, leaving one border officer hurt.

Saturday’s attack comes less than a week after a Palestinian woman was shot and killed after trying to stab Israeli security officers in Jerusalem’s Old City.

No officers were injured in that attack.
