The Conference of Alumni Associations of Nigerian Universities (CAANU) has appealed to the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its ongoing nationwide strike.

Its chairman, Dr. Ahmed Mora, urged the union to suspend the strike in the interest of university education in the country in a statement on Friday.

Mora said that such an action at this time when universities were resuming for the new academic session could not be in the best interest of the nation.

He called on the leadership of the union to further “exploit established avenues before proceeding on the nationwide strike.”

According to him, it is parents and guardians as well as the students in our universities that would suffer most from the action.

Mora said that this was because many students had already reported in their respective universities and had registered for the 2016/2017 academic session, while lectures had begun in some departments.

The chairman noted that the strike could destabilize academic programmes.

He appealed to ASUU to suspend the strike and continue to dialogue with the Federal Ministries of Labour and Employment and Education toward amicable resolutions of areas of dispute with the government.

He also urged the Federal Government to expedite actions that would lead to the resolution of the contending issues in the interests of all.
