Court grants president N50, 000 bail

Charity Felix, the 34-year-old president of `Sweet Sisters’ Association, who allegedly stole N70,660 from the association was on Monday in Lagos granted a N50,000 bail.

An Ojo Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, also asked Felix to produce a surety as part of the bail conditions.

The magistrate, Mr A.A Paul, said the surety must be gainfully employed and should produce evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The accused, who resides in Ojo area of Lagos State, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of assault and stealing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp Simon Uche, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on Sept. 8 at No. 10 Moshalashi St., Etegbin, Ajangbadi, Lagos State.

He said the accused fraudulently converted the N70, 660 contributed by members of the association to her personal use.

Simon said when a member of the association, one Mrs Ikechi Johnson, accused Felix of stealing the association’s money; Felix grew annoyed and beat-up the complainant.

“The accused bit the complainant all over her body, thereby, causing her serious injuries.

“Johnson reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested, ” Simon said.

The offences contravened Sections 171 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Section 171 prescribes a three- year jail term for offenders.
The court adjourned the case to Dec. 5 for mention
