ASUU pledges support to new LASU VC

The Academic‎ Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University (LASU) chapter, said it would give the new Vice-Chancellor full support, provided he followed the rule of law.

Dr Adekunle Idris, Chairman, ASUU-LASU spoke with NAN on Thursday in Lagos.

‎NAN reports that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State had on January 6 appointed Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun as the 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Fagbohun, a Professor of Environmental Law, was until his appointment Director of Research at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of Lagos.

Idris congratulated Fagbohun on his appointment, while commending the state ‎government and the governing council for following the path of wisdom in the selection process.

“We acknowledge the governing council for a job well done and the governor for picking the candidate on merit.

“The new VC will enjoy a 110 per cent support as long as he adheres to the rules and regulations enshrined in the university’s constitution,” he said.

He urged the VC to always do the right thing and be people oriented, praying that God gives him a discerning spirit to run the institution well.

Idris said the union would also ensure that its members do the right thing at all times.

“We would also ensure that some of our members, who are falling out of line, fall in ‎line and perform their duties effectively.

“This would include teaching at the right time, conducting examination and uploading results when due,” he said.

Idris urged the governor to complete the reformation work he had started in LASU by meeting the outstanding demands of the unions.

According to him, this will enable the VC resume work on a clean sheet.

“There are a number of outstanding issues and we intend asking the new VC ‎when he comes in.

“The 2009/2010‎ outstanding arrears ought to have been paid and the damaged vehicles of the unions replaced so that the new VC can start afresh.

“We are sure that Governor Ambode is an action governor and he will do the needful,” he said.

Prof. Kabir Akinyemi, Dean, Students Affairs, LASU advised the new VC to be calm and to ensure that appropriate rules and regulations are followed.

Akinyemi said the VC must be upright and separate the truth from chaff, while making sure that every party adhered to the laid down procedures of the university.

Mr Adebanjo Fatai, Lagos State University Students Union (LASUSU), Public Relation Officer, ‎said the union had trust in the VC to take LASU to the Promised Land.

Fatai urged the VC to ensure that LASU was free of crisis and strike throughout his tenure, as the image of the institution had been dented due to incessant crises.

He also urged the VC to create an avenue‎ for smooth relationship between the students, staff and management of the institution.

Fagbohun was born on October 19, 1966 and hails from Akesan in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos.

He joined the Faculty of Law of LASU as an Assistant Lecturer in January 1991, rose through the ranks, and by 2004, was appointed Associate Professor.

Fagbohun studied Law at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) and obtained Masters Degree in Law from the University of Lagos.

At different times, he served as a member of Senate of the Lagos State University; Head of Department of Business Law and later Department of Private and Property Law.

He was also Coordinator, Law Centre; Coordinator of the Department of Environmental Law and Allied Disciplines of the Centre for Environment and Science Education of LASU.

The VC was for several years, the Editor-in-Chief of the LASU Law Journal.

Fagbohun is a member of several academic and professional bodies, and a fellow of a number of national and international institutions.

NAN reports that Fagbohun succeeds Prof. John Obafunwa, the 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, whose tenure expired on October 31, 2015.

The Lagos State Government through the university’s Governing Council led by Prof. Adebayo Ninalowo, on November 7, 2015 appointed Prof. Fidelis Njokanma as the acting VC.
