At least 100 people have been burnt to death in Nnewi, an industrial town in Anambra State, following a gas explosion on Christmas eve.

According to reports, the tragedy occurred at about 11am when a truck was discharging gas at Inter Corp Oil Limited (LPG Gas Plant), a subsidiary of Chikason Group in the southeastern state of Nigeria.

Most of the dead victims were customers who went to the gas plant to get a refill, while some of the victims were in the neighborhood and passers-by.

Scores of other victims who also suffered severe burns have been taken to Nnamdi Azikwe University Teaching Hospital, NAUTH, Nnewi, while efforts were ongoing to put out the raging inferno.

The cause of the explosion could not be ascertained at the time of this report as there was no official response to enquiries.
