The celebrity special marshals were part of the safety campaign organised by the Lagos State Sector Command of the FRSC, tagged “Speed kills, Slow Down.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the campaign took them to Ikeja, Ojota, Alausa, and Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, distributing fliers.
They urged motorists to drive safely and maintain speed limits during the Yuletide.
Hygenius Umeje, the FRSC Sector Commander in Lagos, said that the corps decided to take the campaign to the public through celebrities to sensitise their fans and others on traffic rules.
“We are reaching out to the motorists through the celebrities; this time, we want their fans to be aware of safety while driving.
“Our mission is to make sure that safety campaign gets to everybody and to ensure they drive safely anytime.
“Don’t drink before driving and if you must drive make sure you don’t drink, life has no duplicate,’’ Umeje said.
Mr Kehinde Nwandu, coordinator of the campaign, said that the programme was initiated to sensitise motorists through the celebrities.
He said that their fans would in turn pass the message to others.
“A music legend called Dagrin died through motor accident and so many, that is why they decided to join the campaign,’’ Nwandu said.
One of the celebrities, Yemi Sodimu, a popular Yoruba actor, said that the celebrities could influence motorists to change their attitude to obey traffic rules.
Sodimu advised motorists to always drive with caution and maintain the approved speed limit.
Rotimi Martins, a popular artist known as `Alariwo of Africa’, said road safety campaign was everybody’s duty, considering that accidents occur always.
Alariwo said he controlled traffic daily due to his passion for road safety.
“I have been controlling traffic. Motorists need to be aware of traffic rules to avoid accidents because many of them are the bread winners of their families,” Martins said.
Kenny St Brown, a musician, urged fans not only to dance to musicians’ music, but ensure that they drive to stay alive.
“What we are doing today is to ensure that our fans drive safely and ensure that they don’t drink while driving to stay alive,’’ she said.
