Promoter, Sponsor unveil package for 4th GOtv Boxing Night

All roads lead to the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos as the promoter and sponsor of the GOtv Boxing Night unveil the package for the fourth edition of the boxing tournament.

The promoter, Flykite Promotion and the sponsor, cable television service provider, GOtv, in conjunction with the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C), will hold a media conference Tuesday to unveil the package for the championship, which has been scheduled for Sunday, 25 October inside the Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.

The competition had its first edition in December, 2014, with the second and third editions held in March and July this year respectively.

The championship has witnessed tremendous improvement with innovations coming with each edition.

A star prize of N1 million wasw won at the last edition, which was held in July. It was the highest for a boxing championship ever staged in Nigeria.

A trophy, tagged Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy, for the best boxer of the night, was also put in place in honour of the late wife of the Chairman of DSTV/MultiChoice Nigeria, Dewunmi Ogunsanya.

Boxers from neighbouring country, Ghana wwere also part of the edition, where a fierce sports rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana was rekindled.

A six-bout professional bout saw Ghana-based female Nigerian boxer, Helen “Iron Lady” Johnson, trading punches with Ghana’s Gifty “Tiger” Ankrah in an international contest. Helen, however, won the fight.

In the second edition, Ghana’s Alfred “Ahwor” Quaye was knocked out by Nigeria’s Waidi “Skoro” Usman in a West African Featherweight title fight.

Also in the last edition, Olaide “Fijaborn” Fijabi, the star Lightwelterweight boxer, won the N1m star prize and he was voted best boxer of the night.
