Man whose wife police killed also dies in hospital from gunshot injuries

Akwa Ibom State-born, Godwin Ekpo, husband of a woman, Idongesit, who was shot dead by policemen at Ijegun area of
Lagos, western Nigeria, over bribe has also died in the hospital where he was taken after he sustained bullet wounds during the attack.

According to his brother, Godwin died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where he was taken for treatment early morning of Saturday.

The victims were shot by a team of policemen attached to the Isheri Osun Police Division in Alimosho Local Government Area.

The couple was returning from a church programme on Wednesday in a tricycle belonging to the family to their home in Abaranje in Ikotun when the incident happened.

Godwin met a police checkpoint at Obalagbe bus stop, where other tricycle riders were being reportedly extorted by an eight-man police team.

P.M.NEWS gathered that when they approached the bus stop, a trigger-happy police officer identified as Aremu Musesiu, reportedly opened fire on the tricycle when the couple refused to give the cops bribe.

The bullet pierced through the tricycle back side and hit Idongesit, who was breast feeding a three-month-old baby.

She died at the spot while Godwin who was also hit by bullet sustained serious injury and was rushed to Ikeja General Hospital where he eventually died.

The late couple who lived at Daniel Street in Ejigbo before they relocated to Abaranje had four children.

The incident sparked protest by motorcycle riders on Thursday who shut down Ijegun Road in Alimosho area of Lagos.

Commercial activities in the area were grounded before the Area Commander, Area ‘M’ Idimu, ACP Akika intervened and brought the matter under control.

P.M.NEWS also gathered that the police team who were involved in the check point toll where the incident happened have been arrested and transferred to the State Police Command Headquarters at Ikeja for investigation.
