Man, 31, Remanded For Disarming Policemen

A 31-year-old man, Sefiu Aniwura, was on Friday remanded in Ilesa Prison by an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly disarming some police officers of their arms and ammunition.

The Magistrate, Mrs Halimatu Bashiru, gave the order that the accused be kept behind bars due to the gravity of the offences.

The accused whose address was not disclosed is facing a six-count-charge bordering on conspiracy, robbery, and being in possession of dangerous weapons.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Duro Adekunle, had told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 14, 2014, at about 3: 25 p.m., at Halleluyah Estate in Osogbo, Osun.

Police logoAdekunle said the accused conspired with others currently at large to rob Onuabuchi Alexander, a Divisional Police Officer (DPO), in Dada Estate.

He told the court that the accused carted way the DPO’s service pistol with breach No.AO9872 with eight rounds of live ammunition.

The prosecutor said that the accused also robbed Nasiru Rasaki, an inspector of police, of his official rifle.

The accused was also alleged to have disposed another police officer, Abdullahi Olokooba, of his AK47 with 30 rounds of live ammunition, during the attack.

Adekunle said the accused was in possession of guns, cutlasses, charms and axes.

He said the offences contravened Sections1 (1), 1(1)(2)(a)(b), 3(1) and 8(1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap R11 Vol. 14 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges but the plea was not taken by the Magistrate.

The case was adjourned till Sept. 16 for hearing.
