The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Thursday said it was set to train private security guards to effectively protect life and property.

The Commandant General, NSCDC, Alhaji Abdullahi Gana, disclosed this in Abuja while receiving a delegation from the University of Abuja and National Open University, respectively.

Gana said the corps had drawn out a training curriculum to ensure professionalism and efficiency in protecting life and property in the country.

“With the establishment of College for Security Management by the corps in Abeokuta and other similar institutes in the country, management and personnel of private security guards in the country would be mandated to undergo these trainings.

“This would involve regular capacity building and training programmes on modern trends in crime prevention and security protection in private and public institutions,’’ he said.

The NSCDC boss observed that criminals were not only posing threat through physical engagements, but had devised other strategies through online and social media for their nefarious activities.

“The only way to contain and curtail them is through training and retraining of our staff as well as private security guards on the new methods and techniques to address the threats,’’ he said.

He said that the corps and other institutions in Abuja, Katsina and Bayelsa states would continue to partner with other institutions in providing training for public officers and potential students in various fields of security.

Earlier in his remarks, the leader of the delegation, Dr Amuche Madu, explained that the purpose of the visit was to present a proposal on professional development programme on law enforcement and security governance.

He said that the proposal was part of its agenda to ensure that agencies of government were knowledge-based institutions.

Madu emphasised that training would improve the morals and credentials of participants as well as curtail excessive expenditure on foreign training of officers.
