The Ogun government on Wednesday announced plans to introduce insurance as a subject in the curriculum of public senior secondary schools as from the 2014/2015 academic session.

The state Commissioner for Education, Mr Segun Odubela, said this when he received 900 copies of insurance text books donated by the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN).

Odubela promised that the state would soon commence recruitment of teachers for the proposed subject.

The commissioner, who expressed delight at the donation, urged the institute to assist the state in training teachers after the recruitment exercise.

“While commending you for this donation, I urge you to be ready to make members of your institute available for the training and retraining of our teachers whenever the need arises,” Odubela said.

He promised that relevant departments in the ministry would review the books and make appropriate recommendations.

President of the institute, Mr Bola Temowo, said the need to promote the study of insurance in public secondary schools in the country informed the donation.

“It is also part of the campaign strategy by the institute to promote teaching of insurance by members of the institute,” he added.

He pledged the readiness of CIIN members to render assistance to the government whenever the need arose.
