Capt. Musa Gemu, the Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, Warri Naval Base, on Friday charged seven newly-promoted officers under his command to be more dedicated to duty.

Gemu, who gave the advice while decorating the seven officers at the Warri Naval premises, enjoined them to justify their elevation.

The officers were Lt.-Cdr. Olutope Odunaike, Lt.-Cdr. David Ali, Lt.-Cdr. Daniel Garba, Lt. Habibu Mohammed, Lt. Ndyaks Istifanus, Lt. Mustapha Shehu and Lt. M. Chukwu.

The NNS Delta Commander said the promotion was as a result of their commitment to fighting illegal oil bunkering and other criminal activities in the waterways.

“No doubt your new elevation is a result of your dedication to fighting illegal oil bunkering. NNS Delta ranks first in terms of fighting oil bunkering in the waterways.

“The elevation is good, but it also means you have been given more responsibilities. The lower ranks have more freedom than those at the top ranks, contrary to what you think.

“But I have no doubt that you will all excel in your new positions. I therefore urge you not to rest on your oars with your elevation. Deliver the job as it is required,” he said.

Responding, Odunaike who attributed the promotion to God and promised to justify the elevation, also urged the younger officers to be dedicated and hardworking.

“Promotion in the Nigerian Navy or elsewhere means additional responsibilities. My promotion means I should go higher in the discharge of my duty and I sincerely hope to do that by the grace of God,” he said.
