The Nigerian Army is investigating the alleged killing of some members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Zaria, Kaduna State, on Friday, an official said.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Olajide Laleye, told NAN by telephone that the investigation would establish what happened.

“However, what is already clear is that Nigerian Army troops did not initiate firing and only acted in self-defence after being fired upon,” Laleye said.

The leader of the movement, Sheikh Ibrahim El’Zakzaky, had told newsmen in Zaria on Saturday that soldiers killed 35 people, including three biological sons of his, during a procession.

El-Zakzaky said members of the movement were on a normal peaceful annual Qudus (religious) procession in support of Palestinians, which was observed all over the world.

He said that on Friday the movement had in its custody 16 corpses, while nine corpses were taken to the teaching hospital in the night apart from his three children.

He added that the soldiers killed three more people on Saturday morning when they were passing in front of Hussainiya, headquarters of the movement.

“One of my sons Mahmud, student of Almustapha University, Beirut ,was shot at the abdomen and started bleeding, we tried to rush him to the hospital but the soldiers blocked everywhere along the way and he bled to death.

“The soldiers also arrested some people, including three of my sons, they were taken alive and later killed two of them.

“They include Ahmad, a Chemical Engineering student at Shenyang University, China; Hamid, an Aeronautical Engineer at Xian University, China, while Ali is still alive but wounded on the leg,” he said.

El-Zakzaky said it was the police that assisted the group in locating the whereabouts of the people in Basawa Barracks.

“When we demanded for the release of our people the army refused (and said) that they would take them to Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) for medication, not knowing that the two were killed.

“I want to assure you that these two children were cold bloodedly murdered because they were taken alive,” he said.

  1. It is disheartning what happened. May their soul rest in perfect peace. However, i dont know when Nigeria muslims are being considered Shiite or Sunni, that is an Arab thing. It’s just like the way we have our tribes, It’s ignorancy. I’m a muslim myself and i don’t believe in this Shiite or Sunni thing, to me everybody is the same. Correct me if i’m wrong.

    • @Bola, you are wrong, it is obvious you are not a real muslim like any other Nigeria from the South. The real Muslims are divided into Sunni and Shites, that confusion has been there since the death of the founder, mohammed.

The division between Shia and Sunni dates back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad, and the question of who was to take over the leadership of the Muslim nation. Sunni Muslims agree with the position taken by many of the Prophet’s companions, that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of the job. This is what was done, and the Prophet Muhammad’s close friend and advisor, Abu Bakr, became the first Caliph of the Islamic nation. The word “Sunni” in Arabic comes from a word meaning “one who follows the traditions of the Prophet.”
On the other hand, some Muslims share the belief that leadership should have stayed within the Prophet’s own family, among those specifically appointed by him, or among Imams appointed by God Himself.

The Shia Muslims believe that following the Prophet Muhammad’s death, leadership should have passed directly to his cousin/son-in-law, Ali bin Abu Talib. Throughout history, Shia Muslims have not recognized the authority of elected Muslim leaders, choosing instead to follow a line of Imams which they believe have been appointed by the Prophet Muhammad or God Himself. The word “Shia” in Arabic means a group or supportive party of people. The commonly-known term is shortened from the historical “Shia-t-Ali,” or “the Party of Ali.” They are also known as followers of “Ahl-al-Bayt” or “People of the Household” (of the Prophet).

So if you are a southern Muslim it is time for you to really consider what you believe. If you lead a prayer however you islamic knowlege No Northerner will pray behind you, go and confirm that.

  2. Justice is what we are after regardless of our differences. Nigeria securities have been killing innocent civilians all over, do you remeber APO SIX, APO 14, and the boy that was coming from church in one of the eastern state in a commercial bike, ? The police stop the bike and request for usual 20 Naira when the boy try to intervene he was killed right in front of his mother and the bible removed ANC replaced with razor and Indian hemp ! Even BH started as a result of killing of their members who are attending a burial on a bike, their offense is absence of wearing crash helmet ! The government has to be serious on securities brutality and the civilians should unite, no one is safe !

  3. @ Oladipupo, in fact you have said it all. An annual Qudus is being carried out as a “Concern” here in Nigeria, for Israel – Palestine conflicts while Chibok Girls are lampooning in Mambosa forest . What a hypocrisy?. The Sheikh has sympathy for Palestinians but not for Nigerian souls lost since the Boko Haram mayhem . Religious bigotry is an absolute opium to the people and a soul for the soulless . A stitch in Time saves nine, so kudos to the military for their early intervention , otherwise we will be singing another turn by now. Ramadan is for peaceful prayers and not for bitterness and rancour mind you Mallam .

  4. someone should do a research about muslims. They dont do peaceful protest.Their protest always turn violent. The next thing they will start killing christain because of the war between isreal and palestine.those protesters carries daggers, guns and charms in their waste. Why do muslim elders cares when their brothers are kill but keep quiet when other people get kill by their brothers?

  5. It is disheartening that at this modern age, some people are still beclouded with religion to the extent of constituting nuisance to their environment all in the name of fighting fruitless course. What is the business of Nigerians with regards to happenings in Israel and Palestinian? In what way is that conflict affecting the members of the Shiites? No one should condone extra judicial killing by the army or any other law enforcement agencies but people should also learn to respect constituted authorities. I think northern elders can save Nigeria from unnecessary bloodshed by calling their children to order and teach them to tolerate other peoples’ opinion and beliefs. This is how Boko haram took off in Nigeria. Enough is enough of religious extremism.

  7. Is Bokoharam listening? This man’s children were in Universities outside Nigeria. The killings by Boko Haram should be enough concern for his group to observe a procession against Boko Haram rather than support Palestinians in far away land, at this time. What an irony. No unjust killing is worth it. Nobody can create or give life except GOD.

  8. Mr New Nigeria u want to tell us that since those protesting are Shiite the Soldiers are Sunnis going by what u said? Where again was it mentioned that if one defy any law he should be killed.

    • I am not defending the Soldiers here. But its only a fool that will jump into a moving train.

  9. If the director of Army public relation is trying to tell us that they fired in self defence, what then can he said of those they arrested and afterward dumbed their death bodies in the mortuary. They killed them in self defence. Mr. Your lies in the issue of chibok girls is still fresh in our minds. U can tell that lies to others but not us.

  10. The Killings in Kaduna and all over in the northern Part of Nigeria is not enough to let this leader know that annual Qudus (religious) procession in support of Palestinians was not feasible at the time? Shites and Sunni war all over the world should never be allowed in Nigeria. This man brought his Children to be killed to win sympathy. This is sad.
