The National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) on Thursday said advertisement for herbal treatment for HIV, hernia, hepatitis, high blood pressure and kidney diseases were illegal.

Joseph Asikpo, the Taraba coordinator of the agency, made this known in Jalingo at a one day sensitisation workshop for manufacturers, retailers and consumers organised by NAFDAC/NYSC Drug Free and Quality Control Community Development Service Group.

He said that Herbal Medicine and Regulated Products Advertisement Regulation of 2005 stipulated that no person shall advertise any herbal medicine unless it is registered by NAFDAC.

The coordinator said the importation of consumables that were produced locally such as frozen chicken, juice, table water, detergents, mosquito coils was prohibited.

He said that the abuse of substances including codeine, tramadol, nimesulide and cosmetics that contained mercury remained banned.

The coordinator cautioned members of the public against patronising consumables that do not carry NAFDAC registration numbers, saying that such products could be sub-standard and counterfeit.

President, Drug Free and Quality Control Community Development Service, Wesley Rubizaka, said the aim of the workshop was to raise awareness on regulated products.

He urged the participants to pay attention to the papers presented at the workshop to safeguard the health of member of the public.
