7 job seekers die in stampede, dozens injured

A recruitment drive by Nigeria’s immigration department has turned tragic in Abuja, the nations’s capital.

At least seven persons were killed and dozens injured after thousands of panicked job-seekers stampeded at the national stadium on Saturday.

Survivors said thousands had gathered to apply for jobs with the immigration department in the Abuja stadium.

One witness said the stampede broke out as applicants surged towards a central stage. They said only one entrance to the 60,000-capacity stadium was open. It wasn’t clear how many people were inside at the time of the crush.

“The immigration service was having a recruitment exercise at the stadium … there was a stampede and they brought the victims to the national hospital,” said hospital spokesman Tayo Haastrup.

No official casualty list was given, but an AFP journalist on the scene counted seven dead and dozens injured.

Many injured people could not be admitted to hospital due to lack of capacity.

Those with stable injuries “will be sent to other hospitals so that we can deal with the numerous injured that continue to arrive,” said Haastrup.

  • What do you expect from blood sucking vampires called politicians. You forget that elections are around the corner. Blood must flow for their enterprises to blossom. The ministry of interior must compensate the families of the deceased because some of them are their family's bread winners. Rest in peace innocent souls.IJN. AMEN

  • This is a national disgrace. 500,000. people applied for employment in just one parastatal of govt. Ho!, what a shame. In a nation where billions are looted on a daily bases, private jets fly our skies unabated. mind u, the immigration service collected 1,000 Naira from each applicant.

  • The Hon.Minister of Interior,Comrade Abba Moro should be held responsible for the shoddy arrangements that led to this stampede and deaths of scores of applicants all over the country. He ordered that the aptitude test should be conducted even when proviisions were not made available to the Paramilitary Board responsible for the conduct of recruitment exercises into paramilitary agencies.Unfortunately, while applicants were jostling and stampeding he was in far away Jos wining and dining with Governor Jonah Jang to commemorate Jang's birthday.May the souls of the dead never rest yet until they haunt all those behind this shoddy exercise that led to their death.

  • The Nigeria Immigration Services has vacancies for 3,000. According to news reports, 11,000 took the test in MInna, Niger state and 3 deaths were recorded. Kano recorded 7 casualties. Unspecified number fainted at the Bauchi centre. Reports for the other states have not been collected. What manner of recruitment is this? Whither goeth Nigeria and her youths? What a pity!
