President Goodluck Jonathan has refused to confirm if he will be running for second term in 2015.

He told a media panel Monday night that any announcement on the issue will create too much political tension.

He asked Nigerians to wait till the time is ripe to know his future ambitions while emphasising that his recent trips to the palaces of traditional rulers, churches and involvement in party activities across Nigeria, is his own as a way of showing he is a President of everyone.

His involvement in rallies of PDP, the President added is a way of playing his leadership role expected of him as a member of PDP: “Even if I do not contest, I will like to lead my party to victory,” said the President.

On the National Conference

President Jonathan also revealed during the interview that the proposed National conference will be inaugurated by him on March 10, but the secretariat will kick off one week before.

He added that the Chairman, Secretary and other officials that will be in charge of organisation of the Conference will also be announced on 3 March.

The President said the Conference was necessary for Nigerians to determine how they are going to live together for the next 100 years, especially since the country has just passed through a centenary.

The President justified the exclusion of the discussion of the possible break up of Nigeria from the agenda of the Conference by saying no president will want to preside over the dissolution of his own country.

He said the conference was not planned to prevent disintegration and shall not discuss it.

“Nigeria will not disintegrate. We are not saying without the National Conference, Nigeria will break,” said Jonathan.

He also argued that result of the National Conference will not affect this administration significantly because its tenure is too short.
