Another batch of 300 students from the northern state of Kano has been selected to benefit from the state’s overseas scholarship scheme.

The latest programme to sponsor students studying Medicine, Pharmacy and other health-related disciplines will gulp N2.7 billion.

Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, while hosting the beneficiaries at Government House noted that his government engaged in the scholarship programme to bridge the manpower requirement in the healthcare sector.

The Governor said that the fund for the scholarship was gotten from Internal Revenue Generation, IGR.

He added that prudent management of state fund has also made it possible to save enough to cater for both physical and human development projects which have direct impact on the lives of the people of the state.

The 300 students are going to India, Egypt, Uganda, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia for their medical training.

According to Kwankwaso, the government has spent billions of naira in funding 501 students, as well as other students to study piloting courses abroad as part of measures to restore Kano’s past glory.

In order to improve the Education sector, Kwankwaso explained that his government has embarked on massive construction of classroom blocks at the cost of N7b, while N5.3 billion is for the construction of Secondary Schools, aimed at youth empowerment, via qualitative education.

Kwankwaso used the occasion to express the determination of his Government to embark on Independent Power Project PPP at Challawa to enhance economic growth, adding that over N13 billion was spent on the provision of potable water for the people of the state.

The Minister of Interior, Abba Moro described Kwankwaso as a pace-setter, explaining that the gesture will go a long way in securing the future of Kano and its people, especially in the health sector and urged all other state government to emulate the actions, which is capable of developing their own state.

In his comment, the state Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran, said 20 General Hospitals were renovated and equipped by the State Government, adding that the state also established Primary Health Care Management Board and two Medical Schools at the Universities of Technology, Wudil and North-West.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Rabiu Suleiman Bichi said the move is aimed at developing enough manpower that will guarantee success of socio-economic development of the state, adding that 100 of the students are to study Pharmacy, another 100 female students are to study Gynaecology, while the last 100 of both male and females are to study medicine in different countries abroad.
