Thirty one persons have been killed and 16 others injured by a tree which fell down in a Nigerian village in Imo State.
The tragedy occurred, during a rainstorm Thursday night at the Ukwu Uko evening market at Umuejinwaoke Umudagu village, Mbieri, Mbaitolu Local Government Area.
A resident of the community, Mr Nnaemeka Emenyonu, told NAN in Owerri that the tree fell on the affected persons around 8:00 p.m. He said the tree also destroyed the village hall.
“The big tree fell suddenly on 31 people, who died at the spot and injured 16 others. Those injured were taken to hospital. The victims include two sisters, who sell tomatoes. Honestly, this is a saddest event in the history of our community,” he said.
The traditional ruler of the community, Eze Godwin Duru, lamented that such a tragic incident had never occurred in the community.
“I do not know what to say. God, what can we call this?, My people were destroyed within a twinkle of an eye. what a pity,” he said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs Joy Elemoko, declined comment on the incident after several efforts to get the command’s reaction to the issue.
In May 2011, a falling tree also killed the Victoria Mimi, wife of the former chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloysius Katsina Alu, in the family home in Alu village, Benue State. The tragedy also occurred during a rainstorm.

o, that was a very sad event, may the lord grant them eternal rest. in jesus name.
It is quite a pity to record such colossal loss of precious lives! I sympathize with the victims and their families…..I think towns, villages, and communities should start felling all those ancients trees that pose great risk to lives and properties. Sadly, our society is a place where we lament of evil when such evil is still fresh in our memories…within a short time we forget and move on…..we must learn to adopt preventive measures. I believe this is not the only ancient tree in Mbieri community (and in other communities across the state)…..how many of those trees have the local govt. authorities cut/felled since after this terrible incident? My heart goes out to the victims and may they find rest on the other side!
This is a very sad day in the history of ala Mbieri, my home town. My people of Isi Mbieri, take heart in this great loss of innocent hearts. May their gentle souls rest peacefully in the LORD WHO giveth and taketh. The Ukor tree that chose to take lives on its demise has completely erased the usefulness it served in human memory. Mbieri autonomous commomunities should not be disillusioned by this tragedy, the worst of its kind in our history. May God give the bereaved families the fortitude to grieve their loved ones.
on behalf of orlu family in umuelezalaohia, umuodom, ibeme ,mbano in imo state, we say sorry to those that are involved in this victim, there is a reason for every thing that happened.
May their souls rest in peace. Amen!!
In times like this, everyone believes in the power of prayer and the importance of their faith. There is tremendous strength in knowing what you believe and living in harmony with those beliefs and values.
Plugging back into your faith after the storm will allow you to release anxiety over the things that you know are too big for you, because you can trust God to handle them.
Dedicate a few minutes or perhaps even an hour per day to quiet mediation and reflection on what matters most if you want to continue to grow strong in spite of the storm.
This is especially important when you or your children may feel lost, alone or afraid. God cares and taking time to pray and release those burdens will help you make it through the rest of your day.
It is well.
May God Almighty grant the innocent victims of the unforgettable disaster rest in His bosom in Jesus precious name. And may He the greatest comforter grant the bereaved befitting fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. Amen
Please compatriots, let’s be self-protective for the fact that we’ve all known the so called “Ukwu-Uko” has been there for not less than three (3) centuries which never happens in the civilized world. The tree had just been left there by elders of the community for blind-folded diabolic purposes which’re spasticious. Please….please…. and please, let’s be cautious so as to create better and harmonious society for life has no duplicate. Really appalling lot of souls had already perished on ignorance. God hear my voice.
I Ajaegbu Izunna; mr courage from ELUAMA URUALLA is throughly sorry for this tragic incident that happen may there sole rest in peace.Amen
