Gov. Rotimi Amechi: state PDP execs sacked

Nnamdi Felix / Abuja

Embattled chairman of Nigerian Governor’s Forum, NGF, and Governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Chibuike Amechi, has lost control of the Peoples Democratic Party’s structure in the state as an Abuja High Court presided by Justice Mohammed Talba, on Monday, sacked members of the executive committee of the party in the state who are loyal to him.

Chief Godspower Umejuru Ake, the sacked chairman of PDP Rivers state chapter has been receiving attacks from persons believed to be supporters of Chief Nyesom Wike, the Minister of state for Education following suspicions that Governor Amechi was not favourably disposed to the minister’s 2015 gubernatorial ambition.

Governor Amechi’s hold on the party structure in the state was total as the sacked chairman is one of his most loyal supporters, thus the need to weaken his influence led to the institution of the matter at the Abuja High Court.

The suit was instituted by Mr. Felix Amechi Obua and Mr. Walter Ibibia Opuene who claimed that they were both duly elected as Chairman and Secretary respectively at the state congress held on 17th March, 2012, by a committee set up by the national headquarters of the party.

Part of the reliefs claimed by the duo, all of which the court granted, include an order directing the party headquarters to swear them in as chairman and secretary respectively and all others duly elected into the state committee at the authentic state congress held on the 17th of March, 2012.

The court also granted an order of perpetual injunction restraining the party from appointing Chief Godspower Umejuru Ake, or any other person(s) in the stead of Obuah Felix and Walter Opuene as chairman and secretary of the Rivers state.

It also made an order declaring null and void all acts purported to have been carried out by persons or group of persons, including Chief Ake, or others who were not legitimately elected at the state congress.

With the sack of his men from the executive committee of the party in the state and the declaration of members of the opposing faction, the influence of Governor Amechi within the party has further nose dived in the face of the ongoing altercation with President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2015 elections.
