Ochei Wheelchair Basketball Tourney: Team Lagos In Bright Start

Lagos State wheelchair basketball team began their campaign in this year’s Victor Ochei International Championship that dunked off yesterday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos,on a bright note as they defeated their opponents from Benin Republic 45-12.

The Lagos Team are keeping up with their promise to win the second edition of the tourney sponsored by the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei  after they finished runners up behind Delta State in the inaugural edition held last year in Delta State.

Playing in the opening day match at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, yesterday, Team Lagos dominated the game against their opponents from Benin Republic who arrived the country few hours before the match.

The other teams from neighbouring countries for the tournament, Ghana and Togo, are already in the country, while states such as Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Kwara, Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Taraba, Edo and Imo are expected to play today.

Team Lagos will play their second match against Benue State tommorrow at the same venue.

President of the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of Nigeria, WBFN, Bukola Olopade, while speaking with P.M News at the venue of the tournament, commended all the teams for showing up at the championship, which he said, was aimed at developing the game in the country.

The winners will go home with N2 million, while the second place team get N1.5 million and the third placed team pocket N1 million, with the remaining N500, 000 to be shared among the best behaved team, best player, best dressed team, among others.

The competition will end on Saturday.
