Police Report: Murder cases reduce In Lagos

A report just released by Nigeria’s Police Command in Lagos state indicated that 106 cases of murder were reported in 2012 as against 134 in 2011.

The report  signed  by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Ngozi Braide indicated that reported cases of murder dropped drastically in Lagos State in 2012 compared with the previous year.

Similarly, reported manslaughter cases dropped from seven in 2011 to four in 2012  while 18 cases of attempted murder were reported in 2011 as against 14 in 2012.

There was also a decline in the reported cases of armed robbery with 175 cases in 2011 compared to 160 in 2012.

However, there was an upsurge in cases of wounding or grievous harm with 1500 cases reported in 2011 as against 2000 reported cases in 2012.

In 2011, 18 cases of attempted murder were reported but it dropped to 14 last year while 11 cases of suicide were reported in 2012 as against 14 in 2011.

Cases of assault also dropped from 2750 in 2011 to 2,500 in 2012 while reported cases of child stealing reduced from 37 in 2011 to 35 in 2012.

The report further showed that reported cases of rape/indecent assault were 142 in 2011 but reduced to 129 in 2012, while  there were 14 cases of slave dealing in 2011 compared to 11 in 2012.

Reported cases of burglary were 148 in 2011 as against 134 in 2012, while demanding with menaces rose from five in 2011 to seven in 2012.

House breaking also declined from 230 cases reported in 2011 to 220 in 2012.

The cases of false pretences which were put at 1212 in 2011 slumped to 1170 in 2012. While 60 cases of store breaking were incidented in 2011, 56 cases were reported in 2012.

Traffic offences rose sharply from 460 cases in 2011 to 509 in 2012, while reported cases of bribery and corruption reduced from seven in 2011 to five in 2012.

In 2011, 13 cases of perjury were reported as against five last year, while 263 cases of breach of public peace were reported in 2011 as against 250 last year.

Those held for gambling in 2011 were 22 as against 18 last year, while six cases of cloning offences were recorded in 2011 as against five last year.

Forgery of currency cases recorded in 2011 were seven compared to six in 2012, while 27 persons were held for arson in 2011 as against 25 in 2012.

In 2011, 150 persons were held for unlawful possession but in 2012 the number rose to 153.

For receiving stolen property, Lagos Police arrested 76 suspects in 2011 while 72 were nabbed for the same offence last year.

It is also reported that 178 people were held for forgery in 2011, while 180 cases  of the same offence were treated last year.
