At least, 116 houses were gutted by fire in Lagos State last month, says the Director, Lagos State Fire Services, Mr Rasaq Fadipe.

Speaking when he received delegates of Southwest Emergency Management Agencies, Fadipe disclosed that the fire service received 167 fire calls in November, alone out of which 51 calls were false, leaving a balance of 116 true fire calls.

He also disclosed that there were 14 rescue calls from incidents such as tanker fire and other disasters while eight people died and three others rescued alive last month, adding that four cases of fuel spillage and two collapsed buildings were recorded.

Fadipe frowned at false emergency calls by residents lamenting that fake alerts of fire had been on the increase in recent time, adding that the development had hampered the capacity of the fire service to respond adequately to genuine emergencies, even as he decried incessant attacks on officers of the service by hoodlums during operations.

“Lately we have been inundated by fake emergency calls and the development is really affecting our operations and response to emergencies. In November , 51 out of the 167 calls we got were false and even among those genuine calls, callers don’t  give exact description of the site of the incident,” he decried.

General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Dr Femi Osanyintolu described crowd management at emergency scenes as a major challenge confronting the agency, saying that government had done a lot to strengthen emergency agencies.

According to him, government would soon begin to sanction fake callers, appealing to residents to desist from false calls, warning that government’s efforts at preventing disasters would amount to naught if residents indulged in acts that could lead to disasters.
