The grip of the Action Congress Party, ACN, in Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, the only local government out of 16 being controlled by the party, is seriously being threatened.

This is because all the executive aides of the council chairman, Saheed Popoola, have all decamped to the People’s Democratic Party, PDP.

The election of the Chairman was recently nullified by the Elections Petition Tribunal, which ruled that the PDP candidate in the local government election held in 2011 was the duly elected candidate.

Popoola, has, however, gone to the Court of Appeal to appeal the judgment of the lower court. The decampees include the Secretary of the local government, Mufutau Adeyemo; Supervisory Councillor for Health, Sarafa Bakare, Supervisory Councillor for Works, Rasheed Amototo and Special Assistant on Poverty Alleviation, Salihu Mustapha.

Speaking on behalf of all the decampees, Mufutau Adeyemo, lamented that ACN had been embroiled in many political crises, adding that the best option to attract development into Offa was to join the PDP.

He said: ”We took the decision to leave ACN for PDP in the interest of the community because we believe that Popoola should have done more for the people.

Adeyemo warned the two ACN lawmakers in the House of Assembly to desist from inciting the people against the government, saying the PDP government under Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has not been biased in its treatment of the people as reflected in the projects, including the Offa General Hospital, it was executing in Offa.

Political analysts opined that the defection of the Chairman’s aides might be a pointer that the Chairman, Saheed Popoola, too might be on his way back to the PDP.
