Joseph Benjamin was one of the Nigerian actors that dazzled during the 17th edition of The African Film Awards (formerly known as the Afro-Hollywood Awards) held at London’s Stratford Town Hall on 3 November.

Other winners included Muka Ray Eyiwumi, Olufemi Adebayo, Kiki Omeili, Hafiz Oyetoro, Bidemi Alaran, Christain Ashiaku and Helen Paul. A special recognition award was given to Chief Ifayemi Elebuibon for his outstanding contributions to arts and culture in Nigeria.

The glittering event hosted diplomats and the crème de la crème of the immigrant segment of Britain’s population. Ace director Tunde Kelani; producer, Tunji Bamishigbin; and Film House’s Kene Mkparu were among the special guests in attendance.

Event organiser, Prince Mike Abiola, paid tribute to the growing African film industry and urged investors to get involved and use the industry as a new platform to partner for growth. Abiola, who is also the publisher of African Voice, said: “The 17th African Film Awards ceremony was spectacular. The turnout was overwhelming and encouraging. It shows that people believe in us.

“As an ambassador of culture, I believe it is essential that we use every opportunity to promote and uphold Nigerian culture through the Nollywood. This was effectively achieved once again with the African Film Awards 2012.”
