Court remands 7 suspects over Ilorin riot

An Ilorin Magistrate Court presided over by Ibrahim Muhammed has ordered seven suspects linked with the violence in some parts of Ilorin metropolis to be remanded at the federal prison, Ilorin.

Three of the suspects, Taibat Yusuf, Wahab Omoerin, and Ahmed Olaiya, according to the Police First Information Report,FIR, were members of Odua Peoples Congress,OPC.

According to the Police Prosecutor, Sgt Nasiru Yusuf, they were charged with “criminal conspiracy, disturbance of public peace, attempt to commit culpable homicide, possession of criminal charms and illegal possession of firearms contrary to sections 97,113,229 and 217 of Penal Code Law and section 3(1) of Firearms Act of the federation of Nigeria 2004.

The other four suspects, tagged Area boys, Ibrahim Opeyemi,Aliu Ibrahim,Ganiyu Aliu and Abiola Rasak were also charged for criminal conspiracy and disturbance of public peace contrary to sections 97 and 113 of Penal Code Law.

Aside the allegation of being in possession of dangerous weapons, they were accused of engaging themselves in a free for all fight in public place at Oja-Gboro\Gambari road on 8 November.

The Prosecutor, who argued against granting the seven suspects bail, said they were likely to tamper with Police investigations,jump bail and cause another crisis in the area if admitted to bail.

But counsel to the suspected OPC members, Abdulganiyu Abdulrazak argued that the accused persons have traceable addresses in Ilorin, stressing that they were men and woman of honour and good character who could neither tamper with Police investigation nor jump bail.

The Counsel to the accused, who appealed to Court to grant his female client bail becuase she is asthmatic, said she was the person that contacted SARS when the hoodlums attacked her in her residence.

The Counsel to the four suspected Area Boys,Onaolapo Muhammed, in his argument noted that the offence alleged to have been committed by the suspects was bailable and if granted by Court, the suspects would not jump bail.

He argued further that section 341(2&3) of CPC empowers the Magistrate Judge to use its discretion to grant the suspect bail with credible sureties.

While ruling on the two cases filed before him, Justice Muhammed ordered that the seven suspects should be remanded in Federal Prison, Ilorin while adjourning the case to l6 November for hearing.
