3 cops killed in assault on police station

Gunmen on Friday killed three policemen and burnt three churches as well as a school in Bonny Yadi, in Nigeria’s volatile northeast state of Yobe state.

Lt. Lazarus Eli, a military spokesman said.”In the early hours of today, gunmen attacked the divisional police station at Bonny Yadi, Yobe state. Three policemen were killed, some arms carted away”.

Lazarus also confirmed to AFP the accounts of residents that the gunmen stormed the town about 3:00 am in several cars and made for the police station, fired shots and killed the policemen.They threw explosives and set the police station ablaze, and later burnt down three nearby churches and a public primary school in the town, they said.

No casuaties were recorded following the attacks on the churches and the school and no arrest was made, Eli said, adding that soldiers have beefed up security in the town.

Blasts and gunfire on Tuesday rocked the town of Gashua in the same state as troops killed four suspected Islamists in a shootout and arrested four others while raiding an alleged hideout.On Sunday, gunmen armed with explosives attacked a police station, a primary school and two cellphone towers in Fika town, also in the state, setting them ablaze.Nigeria’s northeast has been hard hit by deadly attacks blamed on Boko Haram, leaving hundreds of people dead and prompting a heavy army deployment.

Violence linked to the group is believed to have claimed more than 2,800 lives since 2009, including killings by the security forces.!
