The Trade Union Congress,TUC, Rivers State chapter, southsouth Nigeria has condemned the removal of Dr Andrew Efemini as the Head of Department of Philosophy, University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof.Joseph Ajeinka, relieved Dr. Efemini of his position as HOD, for participating in last Tuesday’s protest by the students of the institution over the killing of four of their schoolmates in Aluu Community in Rivers state.

In a statement released to press, the TUC, Rivers State chapter, condemned the hasty action of the vice chancellor and demanded for the reinstatement of Dr. Efemini as the HOD of Philosophy.

The TUC chairman, Rivers State chapter,  Chika Onuegbu,  said “the VC’s decision to relieve Dr. Efemini as HOD  is condemnable, irrational, unlawful, ungodly and provocative.”

It was alleged  that the vice chancellor was insensitive to the killing of the students even when the whole world condemned the manner the students were tortured and roasted to death by the villagers in the community.

TUC, therefore, called for the vice chancellor’s removal from office for taking a provocative action during the mourning of the four students killed in Aluu.

“We equally call for the VC’s removal for not showing adequate concern towards this sad and unfortunate death of the four students,” the statement read.

However, the spokesman for UNIPORT, Dr.Williams Wodi, defended the vice chancellor and the senate of the institution, stating that “the VC merely exercised his right and prerogative in appointing and removal of any HOD.”

Wodi also said that it was not true that the vice chancellor was insensitive to the death of the students as he declared seven days of mourning and flying flags at half mast in their honour.
