The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Thursday condemned the sack of more than 700 Mainstreet Bank workers in contravention of relevant laws of the country.

A statement from the labour union called on the management of the bank to reverse the sack and settle the issue as proposed by the tripartite committee handling the issue.

The statement, jointly signed by TUC President, Peter Esele and General Secretary, John Kolawole, said that it was regrettable that the bank violated the tenets of the extant procedural agreement governing industrial relations in the industry.

“The increasing penchant for lawlessness and abuse of the rights of workers by financial institutions is wrong,” the statement said.

It wondered why the bank abandoned the on-going negotiation by the tripartite committee meant to resolve the problem.

“The TUC had to intervene because the management of Mainstreet Bank abused the rights of workers by sacking them and not paying them the right entitlement,” it said.

It said that the management of the bank wanted to continue to exploit the workers for profit maximisation.

The statement urged the Association of Senior Staff of Banks and Financial Institutions and the management to ensure the rights and privileges of the workers as agreed at the meeting between both parties on July 20.
